About Pilates:

Pilates is a method of exercise developed by Joseph Pilates in the 1920's.  Pilates increases flexibility and strengthens muscles through controlled movements done as mat exercises or with equipment.  Pilates uses breath to relieve stress and tension and allows oxygen to flow to the muscles. In addition, pilates increases circulation and helps to sculpt the body and strengthen the body's "core" or "powerhouse" (torso). People who do pilates regularly feel they have better posture, are less prone to injury, and experience better overall health.

About Joseph Pilates

Joseph Pilates was born in Germany in 1880.  He was a sickly child, suffering from asthma, rickets, and rheumatoid arthritis. Joe was determined to overcome his poor health. He became a gymnast, diver, and body builder. He earned a living as a professional boxer and circus performer. During World War 1, Joe began developing his exercise technique by removing springs from the hospital beds and attaching them to the walls above the bed so patients could exercise while lying down.  After the war, Joseph continued his fitness programs in Germany.  In the 1920's Joe moved to New York where he opened a studio. "Pilates," as it came to be known, was very popular with dancers.  Beginning in the 1950's some of Joe's students opened their own stuidios.  Joe died in 1967 and his method continues today!

"In 10 sessions you'll feel the difference, in 20 session you'll see the difference, and in 30 sessions you'll have a different body."  Joseph Pilates
